Places to Visit
Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou), the supposed birthplace of the Goddess Aphrodite, is to the west of Pissouri, on the B6 towards Paphos. A picturesque view, it’s a must for those souvenir photos. A little further towards Paphos is the Temple of Aphrodite.
Paphos has many sites, but of special interest is the old port and adjacent archaeological park, which is a World Heritage site. At least a full day is needed for the park alone, with ancient ruins, mosaics and catacombs. Paphos has benefitted from being appointed the European City of Culture during 2017. A pedestrianized centre makes browsing easy and a visit to the market is a must. Restaurants also offer a spectacular view over Kato Paphos and the sea behond.
Limassol has an impressive new marina and promenade surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars. It is also a place where concerts and events take place. Take a boat trip or explore the old town where you can shop, eat or explore the castle.
Kolossi Castle is on the Western edge of Limassol, and is a unique experience with the garrison castle and adjoining sugar refinery.
Kourion and the Temple of Apollo are located near Kourion beach between Pissouri and Limassol and are amazing archaeological sites with wonderful photo opportunities.
Anogyra is a beautiful hilltop village with the Carob Museum, Olive Oil Museum, and the old Timios Stavros monastery, a unique photo opportunity.
Omodos is a village centered in the heart of the wine grape growing region. The monastery is beautiful and home to many sacred relics. Omodos is known for its wines, local delicacies, and silversmiths. There arealso several shops selling local lace and reasonable prices.
Kikkos Monastary is situated in the mountains, and is worth a visit, if not for the drive alone. It should be followed by a trip through Cedar Valley.
The Venetian bridges are a beautiful visit in the foothills near St. Nicholas. Two of the bridges in the area are easily accessible, but the third would require a 4X4. There are “safaris” available which take you to the bridges.
There are wine routes to follow that offer the opportunity to sample the wines of the region.
